Fake “official-looking” Medicare mail is being sent to seniors, assigning a phony appointment time and listing non-official 1-888 phone numbers.
Here’s what to watch out for:
• Mailers claiming you have a “scheduled appointment” with Medicare
• Calls or texts from unknown numbers asking for Medicare or Social Security info
• Scare tactics saying your benefits are at risk
• Promises of “free” services or benefits — if you just give your info or pay a fee
REMEMBER:
• Medicare does NOT schedule appointments by mail or phone out of the blue
• You must contact Medicare yourself to handle appointments or plan changes
•Never call numbers listed on suspicious mail — always check the official number
Protect yourself — and your loved ones:
If you’re ever unsure, hang up and call the official Medicare number:
1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)
